Fuzzy or Non-Fuzzy? A Comparison between Fuzzy Logic-Based Vulnerability Mapping and DRASTIC Approach Using a Numerical Model. A Case Study from Qatar

Vulnerability maps are useful for groundwater protection, water resources development, and land use management. The literature contains various approaches intrinsic vulnerability assessment, they mainly depend on hydrogeological settings anthropogenic impacts. Most methods assign certain ratings weights to each contributing factor vulnerability. Fuzzy logic (FL) is an alternative artificial intelligence tool overlay analysis, where spatial properties fuzzified. Unlike the specific rating used in weighted overlay-based mapping methods, FL allows more flexibility through assigning a degree of contribution without boundaries classes. This study compares results DRASTIC approach with approach, applying both Qatar aquifers. comparison was checked validated against numerical model developed same area, actual contamination load. Results show some similarities differences between approaches. While coastal areas fall category high cases, shows greater variability than better matches probably suited assessment methods.
